Carlsro is a summer house that the shipowner and tradesman Carlström had built in the year 1896. The wooden house in New Renaissance style is a three-storey building. What remains of the original summer house garden is the trees that were originally planted there, the stone fence and the stone pier at the beach. A few other similar shipowners’ residences remain in Kristinestad. Together they form an important part of the town’s sailing and shipbuilding heritage.
The park was at its peak at the end of the 19th century when the social elite of the town used to spend glorious summer days in its calm surroundings. Exotic plants and flowers that sailors had taken home from their voyages lent vibrant colour to the flower-beds. Peacocks strutted about on the lawns and people socialized, played croquet and spent time enjoying the summer. Still today, the park at Carlsro is worthy of its name, which means “Carl’s Rest”. The tranquility of nature and the bird song to be heard there have a calming effect on the visitor’s mind. At Carlsro you can rest a while and take time out from the stress of modern living.
