Parks and squares in Kaskinen
Carlsro in Kristinestad

A walking-tour of Kaskö, with its beautiful wooden houses, combines the experience of the historical Bladhska House garden with parks and squares built according to the original town plan.

Kaskö is an island town that represents an over 200 year-old town planning tradition that is characterised by an ordered structure and wooden houses with large courtyards and gardens. Superintendent Carl Johan Cronstedt designed the town plan in 1765. It is in Classical style with one axis coming from the western strand through King Gustav Avenue, for official buildings, and another axis, for trade and commerce, that intersects the first and goes north-south along Bladhska Road. In time, however, trade became concentrated to the street Rådhusgatan and later around the square.

The walking-tour takes you through this idyllic, green town, with its characteristic wooden houses and gives you the opportunity to learn somethingof its maritime history. The well-preserved wooden buildings and the peaceful parks and market squares invite you to enjoy the atmosphere of bygone days.

1. The Market Square
The fountain that was built for the town’s 200 year anniversary acts as a meeting-place for many of the locals.

2. King Gustav Avenue
The avenue is lined with impressive 150 year-old lime-trees. On the last weekend in May, the traditional Spring Fair is held here.

3. Pinewood Park
Indigenous pine-trees grow naturally in the park. On the northern side there is a playground. The gate at the playground’s entrance is a copy of the town’s tariff gate, which was torn down in the 1930’s.

4. Church Square
The church square did not have its church until as late as 1965. The new church, designed by Erik Kåkström, is framed by a clump of naturally growing pine-trees.

5. The Railway Station area
The railway line to Kaskö was completed in 1913. Around the station house, built in Jugendstil, a park area was also established, with rare types of deciduous and coniferous trees. Passenger traffic to Kaskö ceased in 1964. Today the park is in need of substantial restoration work.

6. Fishmarket Square
There is a fire-bell on the square that originates from the 1800’s, as well as one of the town’s public wells, which supplied the local people with fresh water until as recently as the 1970’s.

7. Sjöbobacken and Fiskstranden ( Sjöbo Hill and Fishing Shore)
This culturally significant area has been of great importance to Kaskö. In one of the former salting-houses you will find the town’s fishing museum, which offers insight into the fishing industry and its importance from past to present.

8. The Town Park
The rare types of deciduous and coniferous trees planted in the Town Park originate from the late 1800’s. A bandstand was erected in this centrally situated park in 1990. Various cultural events are held in the park during the summer months.

9. Bladhska House
The founder of the town, Peter Johan Bladh had a stately trading house erected beside Kaskö channel in 1788. The early 19th century garden with its paved pathways, herb garden and rose plantations, was discovered during restoration work in the 1990’s. The garden is now restored to resemble its original appearance as closely as possible.

10. Haymarket Square (Hötorget)
The square was once an open field. Lawns were established here in the 1970’s.Like on Fishmarket Square, there is an old-fashioned fire-bell here and a public well.
