Kingsbarn Park (Kungsladugårdens park) in Old Vaasa, about 7 kilometres from the city centre, offers a variety of entertainment possibilities both for tourists and locals
The area has a history that goes a long way back. In 1556, the Swedish king of that time, Gustav Vasa, founded a royal cow-house/barn on the site. By imperial decree, an agricultural training school was started there in 1859 which continues to this day. The training school is now run by the Swedish Polytechnic and, as well as agriculture, now includes forestry, gardening and craft.
The park, which is almost 50 hectares, consists of areas with older trees, lawns, avenues and a newly planted arboretum. Here you will find indigenous and international varieties of trees, fruit-trees and berries as well as different types of perennial plants. Both flowering and green tropical plants thrive in the winter garden.
The park area creates a picturesque green room – a room that invites you to recreation and exercise and to spend time in its informative and aesthetically pleasing environment. In the garden shop ‘Solrosen’ (The Sunflower), you can buy vegetables and ornamental plants from the school’s own garden.
The park is open to the public all year round. If you wish to visit the greenhouse or have a guided tour you should make a reservation in advance.
